Donation of 1000 Illustrated Bilingual School Books to Puerto Peñasco Schools

 On Monday July 10 the Larry D. Large Foundation presented 1000 Richard Scarry illustrated bilingual school books to the Puerto Peñasco schools. Mayor Ramon Martinez accepted the book donation on behalf of the schools at a presentation held at the Hacienda Las Fuentas Restaurant. These books are by the renowned children’s author and illustrator Richard Scarry and are for 1^st and 2^nd grade children who are learning English. The donation was comprised of 500 hard bound language books (Best Word Book Ever – El mejor libro de palabras) and 500 hard bound math books (Best Counting Book Ever – El mejor libro para contar) with a total value of $15,000US. Each language book shows an illustration of an object, animal or color along with the English and Spanish word for the object. Likewise each math book shows a math problem such as 3 + 4 = 7 along with a numerical illustration of objects and a description of the math problem in English and Spanish.

 In the spring of 2006 there were 456 students in 1^st and 2^nd grade bilingual classes enrolled in Puerto Peñasco schools. These children will all greatly benefit from these books.

 Joyce Harcharik, an internationally acclaimed artist and generous supporter of the Larry D. Large Foundation along with Eric Howard of Northland Publishing Company in Flagstaff, AZ were instrumental in facilitating the donation of the books. Without Joyce and Eric this wonderful donation to the school children of Puerto Peñasco would not have been possible.
